“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Anais Nin An Invitation to Therapy
Hello, and welcome to my profile! I personally invite you to be part of a supportive, professional therapeutic experience. My approach is based in systemic theory, thus I welcome your individuality and look forward to celebrating your unique life. By utilizing solution-focused and narrative approaches which are effective in resolving various concerns, we can develop concrete tools to overcome hurdles that are preventing you from living the life you prefer. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I work predominantly with individuals and couples dealing with anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress.
Before pursuing a career in psychotherapy, my sensitivity to the human condition and exposure to multicultural nuances was developed in the global travel industry. I was also immersed in the fast paced Fortune 500 business world as an operations manager.
My formal education includes a Bachelor of Science in Marketing/French Minor from Southern Illinois University, followed by a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University. My internship experience in North Miami, at the Nova Fischler Center for Assessment and Intervention, further sharpened my skills. As one of the lead therapists working on a government funded study to assist veterans returning from combat, I used both traditional cognitive behavioral with systems based techniques to treat post-traumatic stress and depression. I had the privilege, to be a lead clinical counselor for the Hospice Care of South Florida’s Camp Coral and Camp Erin. These camps supported the special needs of grieving children between the ages of 8 to 16 years of age. After completing my degree, colleagues and I formed a group called, “Amis d”Haiti” (Friends of Haiti). Our inaugural trip to treat those who experienced the catastrophic earthquake was successful and we continue to plan for the future.
I look forward to discussing how therapy can be helpful to you.
Valerie is a Registered Marriage & Family Therapist Intern working towards licensure.
